Small Business Plans Are Amost Always Done Incorrectly!
Creating small business plans is almost ALWAYS done incorrectly!
I can hear you saying…
“What is this guy talking about”?
Why would he start with a negative? I want to know more about how to create my small business plans!
At this point am not going to talk about how to improve Marketing…or Sales…or Operations…or Finances (money issues)…or Management – Not for now at least!
We will get to that later.
Let’s start with YOU!
Please answer this question.
Why did you get into your own business in the first place?
I’ll bet you wanted the freedom that comes with owning your own small business, right?
I’ll also hazard another guess, you wanted to make a lot more money than you were making…am I right?
My guess is that you may have been frustrated with a boss who “micro-managed” everything you did (that was my primary motivation for starting my small business – I hated not being in control of what I did every day -- with a passion I hated it!).
So I went about creating my small business plans believing I was on the right path.
Boy was I wrong.
I documented my Marketing and Sales plans and prepared presentations to go to the banks to get funding. That seems logical right?
I asked a partner to join me (not because I really wanted a partner but I didn’t have enough money to get started) seems like a reasonable approach, right?
I even documented how we would operate the business, I did cash-flow projections, I wrote good job descriptions for employees, etc., etc.
These are the things that the “experts” or “consultants” tell you is your starting point, right?
Well…the experts and I were both WRONG!
I learned from painful experience that I should have worked backwards.
What does that mean?
I had to figure out what my business would look like at the “END” of my business so that I would know what to work on at the “BEGINNING” of the business.
That may sound a bit strange but it is an important message.
I also learned (painfully) That SMART small business plans start with ME.
I needed to start with ME.
I needed to figure out what my hopes, dreams and ambitions were.
I needed to make these things crystal clear if I was going to have any chance of success.
I am sure no one has told you this before.
But it’s important!
If you don’t SEE what your business will look like at the END there two most likely outcomes...
You will simply be creating a job for yourself…
Or...
You may be headed for HUGE disappointments and worse yet, maybe a business failure.
So where do we go from here?
Let me guide you. I would like you to benefit from some painful and unnecessary experience in had when I was working on my small business plans.
